Woman with lustrous long locks of hair.

As someone with thin and fine hair, I'm acutely aware of the impact that proper hair care can have on hair health. In this article, I'll share some Ayurvedic hair care practices that I've found effective. If you're new to Ayurveda, we also have an introductory article that delves into the principles of Ayurveda. https://vishtarainc.wixsite.com/blog/post/ayurveda-a-holistic-approach-to-wellness

Understanding the Doshas:

Ayurveda is grounded in the concept of three energies (doshas) that each person has - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person has a unique combination of these energies, and Ayurveda aims to maintain this balance. Hair care remedies are designed to address imbalances in these doshas.

  • Vata Hair: Originally thin, fast-growing, but can be prone to getting frizzy when imbalanced.

  • Pitta Hair: Straight, soft, but very fine. Imbalances can lead to thinning and premature graying.

  • Kapha Hair: Typically wavy and thick, but can become oily and heavy when imbalanced.

Natural Remedies in Ayurvedic medicine serve to create a balance in one's hair

Now that we have an understanding of the hair types and hair imbalances in Ayurveda, let's go through various Ayurvedic hair care practices:

1. Regularly Oil Hair

One of the most important Ayurvedic hair care practices is to regularly oil your hair. Certain oils like coconut oil, sesame oil, or amla oil are known to have good effects on your hair. It's best to place your oil in a bowl and warm it up a little bit. Make sure to massage the oil onto all parts of your hair, but concentrate it on your scalp. Let the oil sit in your hair for at least 45 minutes before washing it off in the shower. I personally like to let oil sit in my hair overnight and wash it off in the morning as I see the best results that way.

2. Follow Best Practices for Hair

Certain hair care practices don't take too much time, but can really make an impact on your hair. Ayurveda suggests certain best practices to Try to minimize the amount of Heat as it can strip your hair of its natural oils. Avoiding harmful chemicals in your hair products can maintain the health of your hair. It's also important to not over wash your hair and give your hair breaks from shampooing. I wash my hair around 2-3 times a week instead of every day just to give my hair a break.

3. Use Herbal Shampoos

Herbal shampoos can contain Ayurvedic ingredients that are also helpful for your hair. I recommend the AyurVita Ultra Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioners. This shampoo and conditioner contains Neem & Reetha which are two natural cleansers that promote hair growth. Hair masks can also be commonly used to promote your hair health. These masks can be easily made with ingredients in your household.

4. Diet and Nutrition

Ayurvedic wisdom goes beyond products; it encompasses lifestyle choices. Eating a balanced diet that supports your dosha type can significantly impact your hair's health. Including foods like aloe vera, spinach, and almonds can be beneficial. Certain foods are known to also be good for your hair. Opt for organic dairy products instead of regular dairy products. Vegetables like carrots, beets, kale, and spinach are also known to be great for your hair. Lastly make sure that you are drinking a lot of water to keep your body hydrated.

Ayurvedic hair care is a holistic approach that seeks to balance the body and mind to achieve luxurious, healthy hair. By understanding your dosha type and incorporating Ayurvedic rituals, herbs, and lifestyle practices into your hair care routine, you can unlock the secrets to vibrant, resilient locks that shine with natural beauty.
